Holiday Activities for Rainy Days and Long Journeys!

With the holidays fast approaching parents may want to consider a few of the following activities to fill the "I'm bored" stages and also avoid the holiday brain slide which sometimes happens:

1. Read everywhere you go - signs, catalogues, brochures, menu, notice boards, etc.

2. Visit the library, museum, gallery, park, shopping centres. Describe what you see, hear and do as this is a great way to expand your child's vocabulary.

3. Shopping centres and libraries often have free, educational activities.

4. Practice typing on a website such as typingclub.com It's free and it will help when your child sits NAPLAN using the computer next year.

5. Learn the 2, 5 and 10 times tables. We have been learning them in class but learning them in a random order is our next step!

6. Challenge your child with an every day Mathematical word problem to solve. This can be when you are cooking, or setting the table, shopping, etc. For example: If I make 20 cookies and there are 4 people in the family, how many cookies will we each get? If I had $10 how many punnets of tomatoes could I buy?

7. Play card games - add two cards together - who is fastest?

8. Car number plate games or choose a car colour to spot on a long drive - which is the most popular?

Happy and safe holidays to all!
