Maths Chants for Column Addition and Subtraction

Some parents have asked how we teach column addition and subtraction at Wattle Grove Primary School. The following are chants which we use in class to help us solve these problems.

Column Addition or Subtraction Without Regrouping

First rule always check the sign.
Second rule are my numbers in line.
Start in the ones column.
Write the answer down.
Move to the tens column.

Column Addition With Regrouping

First rule always check the sign.
Second rule are my numbers in line.
Start in the ones column. 7 + 6
Put down the 3 regroup the 1.
Move to the tens column.
Continue………..
